From 1918. Made in New York City.

Fantastic vintage 5-string Orpheum No.3 Special from 1918. Made in New York City. A truly rare and beautiful open back banjo from the premier makers, Rettberg and Lange. Very good playing condition. This fancy Orpheum #3 Special was the highest cataloged model in the numbered style series and represents Orpheum’s instrument craft at its finest. The #3 Special features fancy shaped abalone and pearl inlay in the fingerboard and on both sides of the headstock, floral carved heel, wood binding, multiple contrasting wood laminations everywhere and an extra marquetry strip around the rim. White holly neck, maple rim. This banjo is quite rare in a 5-string model; most extant examples of this style are tenors.
